Key stats

  • Urawa won their only previous FIFA match against a Mexican club. That was a 1-0 victory against Club León in the second round of the competition now known as the FIFA Intercontinental Cup in December 2023.
  • Monterrey’s only previous FIFA match against a Japanese team was a penalty shoot-out defeat against Kashiwa Reysol (L 4-3 PSO after a 1-1 draw) in the quarter-finals of the competition now known as the FIFA Intercontinental Cup in December 2011 – that was their first ever FIFA competition fixture.
  • Urawa have played ten matches in FIFA club competitions – more than any other Japanese team.
  • Urawa have lost their last four FIFA competition matches.
  • Japanese teams have been successful in all their previous four FIFA club competition matches against Mexican opponents with three wins in regular time and a penalty shoot-out victory for Kashiwa Reysol against Monterrey.
  • Monterrey have lost only two of their last eight matches in all competitions (W4 D2 L2).
  • Urawa’s coach Maciej Skorża oversaw Wisla Krakow when they faced a Barcelona team with Monterrey’s current boss Domènec Torrent as an assistant coach to Pep Guardiola in the 2008/09 UEFA Champions League third qualifying round. Wisla won the second leg 1-0 at home but were eliminated on aggregate having lost the first leg 4-0 in Spain.

Urawa Reds vs Monterrey prediction

The Urawa Red Diamonds have declined since they ensured their qualification for the FIFA Club World Cup a couple of years ago. They began their campaign with a 3-1 defeat to River Plate that perhaps flattered them in their opener before then taking the lead against Internazionale but eventually going on to lose by two goals to one.

They now face a Monterrey side that have been difficult to play against in their opening couple of games. They shared a 1-1 draw in their opener against the aforementioned Inter before the Mexicans then shared a hard-fought and quite entertaining goalless draw with River Plate the other day.

The Urawa Reds have been competitive thus far but it would still be the more sensible bet to side with Monterrey for this one in their final group stage clash.
