Union Berlin Preview: Union comfortably safe
Within the last few years, Union Berlin have risen to the Bundesliga for the first time ever before then qualifying for the UEFA Europa Conference League, UEFA Europa League and UEFA Champions League in successive seasons but they have now entered a period of regression.
Despite that regression, they are arguably still performing above expectation by comfortably sitting in the middle of the Bundesliga table. They fought back from 2-0 down at Alta Forsterei against Werder Bremen to earn themselves a 2-2 draw in the capital city last weekend.
Heidenheim Preview: Heidenheim in danger
Much like Union, Heidenheim have also risen to the Bundesliga for the first time ever in recent seasons with their promotion in 2023 a sixth promotion this century having been playing in the regionalised sixth tier as recently as the 2003/04 campaign.
They then qualified for the UEFA Europa Conference League, too, last season but rather than being able to emulate Union by moving through the European competitions, they have since been involved in a relegation battle that they remain very much a part of this season.
Union Berlin Team News: A few injuries
Union Berlin have a few confirmed absentees for this weekend such as Diogo Leite, Jeong Woo-yeong and Aljoscha Kemlein. They also have some key doubts such as defenders Jerome Roussillon and Josip Juranovic, whilst Robert Skov is also potentially unavailable.
Predicted XI (3-5-2): Ronnow; Doekhi, Querfeld, Vogt; Trimmel, Schafer, Khedira, Haberer, Rothe; Hollerbach, Ilic
Unavailable: Leite (Injured), Jeong (Injured), Kemlein (Injured)
Questionable: Roussillon (Injured), Juranovic (Injured), Skov (Injured)
Heidenheim Team News: Muller out
Heidenheim goalkeeper Kevin Muller is unavailable for this weekend’s trip to Berlin as he deals with a concussion. They are also expected to remain without attacking duo Sirlord Conteh and Leo Scienza due to respective injury issues.
Predicted XI (3-4-2-1): Feller; Mainka, Gimber, Siersleben; Traore, Busch, Schoppner, Kratzig; Beck, Honsak; Pieringer
Unavailable: Muller (Concussion)
Questionable: Conteh (Injured), Scienza (Injured)
Union Berlin vs Heidenheim Prediction
Union Berlin have been coasting along in the last couple of months as they appear destined for a mid-table finish. Their safety becoming secure in the Bundesliga has been followed by the handbrake coming off and some entertaining games. They now face a Heidenheim side that themselves should also be entertaining, too, as they try and pull off a victory that could well ensure they avoid relegation so goals are to be expected in the capital city.
