Union Berlin Preview: Much-needed win

Union Berlin come into this one on the back of a come from behind 2-1 defeat of high-flying but out of form Eintracht Frankfurt at the Deutsche Bank Park last weekend with Leopold Querfeld and Jeong Woo-yeong scoring for Union after Michy Batshuayi had scored for Frankfurt.

Prior to that much-needed victory, Union had suffered three successive defeats as they drifted down towards the bottom three and the danger zone in the Bundesliga. They will hope to kick on towards the middle-of-the-table in the final few months of the campaign.

Bayern Munich Preview: Belligerent Bayern

Bayern Munich managed to overcome defending German champions Bayer Leverkusen by two goals to nil away from home in midweek in the second-leg of their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie, completing a 5-0 aggregate rout of their compatriots.

Bayern did stutter last weekend in fairly embarrassing fashion. They raced into a 2-0 lead against relegation-threatened Bochum at the Allianz Arena but were stunned as they suffered a 3-2 loss to the Bundesliga strugglers.

Union Berlin Team News: A few issues

Ahead of the visit of Bayern this weekend, Union Berlin have a few issues here as Aljoscha Kemlein remains sidelined alongside Denmark international attacker Robert Skov. Kevin Vogt is also a doubt as he deals with a knee injury.

Predicted XI (3-5-2): Ronnow; Doekhi, Querfeld, Leite; Trimmel, Haberer, Khedira, Tousart, Juranovic; Skarke, Ilic

Unavailable: Kemlein (Injured), Skov (Injured)

Questionable: Vogt (Injured)

Bayern Munich Team News: Joao Palhinha suspended

Former Fulham defensive midfielder Joao Palhinha was sent off against Bochum last weekend and that turned the game on its head. The Portugal international is now missing through suspension, whilst the likes of Manuel Neuer and Aleksandar Pavlovic remain out injured.

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Urbig; Boey, Stanisic, Dier, Ito; Goretzka, Guerreiro; Sane, Muller, Gnabry; Kane

Unavailable: Neuer (Injured), Peretz (Injured), Buchmann (Injured), Pavlovic (Injured), Joao Palhinha (Suspended)

Questionable:

Union Berlin vs Bayern Munich Prediction

Union Berlin have punched well above their weight in German football for the last few years, reaching the heights of UEFA Champions League qualification. They are regressing but remain a team that will be disappointed at being so close to the bottom three. They now face a Bayern Munich side that rotated heavily last weekend and got away with it because Bayer Leverkusen also lost at home, to Werder Bremen. Bayern will be firm favourites but Union scoring wouldn’t be a surprise as Bayern once again rest and rotate.
