VIKTORIJA GOLUBIC
29-year-old Viktorija Golubic set a career-high WTA world ranking of 35th late last month but having lost the points she won by reaching the Monterrey Open final last season she has been pulled back to 51st place. The Swiss enjoyed an excellent 2021, finishing runner-up at the Lyon Open to Clara Tauson, reaching the quarter-finals of Wimbledon and winning a Gold Medal in the Women’s Doubles event at the Tokyo Olympic Games.
YULIA PUTINTSEVA
World number 47 Yulia Putintseva won the first tour-level match of her season, and a first since the last edition of Indian Wells last October, with a straight sets result over Ashlyn Krueger. The 27-year-old won the second WTA title of her career at the Budapest Open last season having finished runner-up to Alison Van Uytvanck at her home tournament in Kazakhstan.
THE PREDICTION
Viktorija Golubic won the only previous meeting with Yulia Putintseva in straights in the second round of Wimbledon back in 2019. The Swiss has struggled for decent for this season but she looks the likelier woman to come through this tight contest with plenty more match practice behind her. This one could go either way and it would be worth keeping it out of an accumulator, although taking Golubic to win at least a set looks a reasonable compromise.
