VICTORIA AZARENKA
Former world number one Victoria Azarenka played out a thrilling Indian Wells final with eventual champion Paula Badosa last October. The 32-year-old’s most recent of 21 career WTA titles was won at the Western & Southern Open in 2020 as one of eight Masters titles, including two Indian Wells titles from 2012 and 2016. Azarenka is a two-time Grand Slam champion after winning back-to-back Australian Open titles in 2013.
ASTRA SHARMA
World number 96 Astra Sharma came through the main draw of Indian Wells as a lucky loser after Andrea Petkovic was forced to withdraw from the tournament and she made full use of it with a straight-sets victory over Magda Linette. The 26-year-old won her first WTA title last season at the Charleston Open.
THE PREDICTION
With the element of surprise no longer helping Astra Sharma this should prove to be something of a mismatch in a first meeting with two-time Indian Wells champion Victoria Azarenka. The world number 15 reached the round of 16 at the Australian Open before losing to Barbora Krejcikova but the first three matches there were comprehensive straight set affairs that can be expected here.
