World number 12 Holger Rune dug deep to come back from a set down to oust in-form clay specialist Mariano Navone, turning the screw in the second-set tiebreak. The 20-year-old failed to defend his two Munich Open titles last week in a sorry hammering by eventual champion Jan-Lennard Struff but the result was in keeping with his erratic form in recent months as he continues to struggle to rediscover his bullish best.
World number 25 Tallon Griekspoor came back from a set down to survive a tough assault by Taro Daniel on Friday but it was a fifth three-set match on the spin for the Dutchman, with a 3-2 record for that span suggesting he is labouring harder than he should for wins at the moment. The 27-year-old beat Rune on clay in their only previous encounter at the Hamburg Open in 2022 but the Dane fully blossomed into the top 10 player he can be later that season, although as mentioned he is currently desperately seeking a return to that status.
