World number three Stefanos Tsitsipas had to win all five matches at the ATP Finals to snatch a slim chance at making the year-end number one but he failed at the first hurdle with a ninth-straight defeat to Novak Djokovic. The 24-year-old has won more matches on tour (60) than anyone else but he has also suffered now 23 defeats that have seen him crash out of several strong campaigns and five of his seven finals played this season. Tsitsipas won the ATP Finals in 2019, his greatest title to date of a career total of nine.
World number five Daniil Medvedev set a career-high ATP world ranking of number on a few occasions this season, built mostly off the back of winning his maiden Grand Slam title at the US Open last year and finishing runner-up to Rafael Nadal at the Australian Open in January. The 26-year-old has struggled to find that intensity for prolonged campaigns perhaps ever since that five-set soul-crusher against an inspired Nadal and he was caught short on Sunday as Andrey Rublev came back from a set down to provide an early upset. Medvedev won the ATP Finals in 2020 in its last appearance in London.
THE PREDICTION
This could be the most thrilling, most contested round robin of the group stages at the ATP Finals between two players who almost always bring the best out of each other. Stefanos Tsitsipas beat Medvedev in three sets in their most recent meeting to reach the Cincinnati Open finals but Medvedev got the better of the Serb in their previous meeting, also semi-finals, to reach the Australian Open final in four sets. Medvedev leads their head-to-head record 7-3 but Tsitsipas has won three of their last five matches to claw back some dignity in what is now proving to be a fierce rivalry. The Greek beat Medvedev for the first time in the semi-finals of the ATP Finals in London back in 2019, en-route to his title there, but the indoor conditions in Turin still favour the Russian’s game more. Three sets could be a suitable move after both of their matches this season saw a set go either way but the sensible pick is taking Medvedev to earn at least one of them. You could consider adding at least a tiebreak in the match, as has happened in five of their last six encounters.
