World number 49 Shelby Rogers played well to overcome a tough competitor in Nuria Parrizas-Diaz on Thursday. The 29-year-old enjoyed some strong form on home soil last season, not least a run to the round of 16 at the US Open after beating world number one Ash Barty in three sets. Rogers also reached the quarter-finals of Indian Wells before losing to next opponent Jelena Ostapenko.

World number 12 Jelena Ostapenko won the Dubai Tennis Championships last month via incredible performances over Grand Slam champions galore in Sofia Kenin, Iga Swiatek, Petra Kvitova and Simona Halep. The 24-year-old has a total of five WTA titles so far, with her 2017 Roland-Garros trophy the clear stand-out.
THE PREDICTION
In-form Ostapenko leads Rogers 3-0 in their head-to-head record, including in the quarter-finals of last October’s edition here in the desert. The Latvian has been in insatiable form over the last month, with two semi-finals and a title from her last three tournaments. Her three defeats this season have come at the hands of top 10 players Paula Badosa and Anett Kontaveit (twice) so backing her to win outright here seems a reasonable conclusion.
