World number seven Paula Badosa won her first Masters title here back in October with a huge victory over Victoria Azarenka. The Spaniard added a third WTA title to her career total at the start of this season with a superb run at the WTA 500 Sydney Tennis Classic that looked set-up to see her challenge for the Australian Open title. A loss to eventual runner-up Danielle Collins in the round of 16 in Melbourne came as a shock and she has exited her last two tournaments early.
TEREZA MARTINCOVA
World number 42 Tereza Martincova conceded just three games to Heather Watson in the first round of Indian Wells. The 27-year-old Czech recently shocked Elina Svitolina in the first round of the Qatar Open before a round of 16 exit to Ons Jabeur.
THE PREDICTION
This is the first meeting between Tereza Martincova and Paula Badosa at tour level but the Czech has won each of their three non-tour meetings. The pair have progressed from the ITF circuit onto the tour over the last few years but Badosa was one of the most-improved players in 2021 and the defending champion should have too much for opponent this time around. Badosa has struggled to find her ruthless best for a while, so take her to win outright for caution’s sake.
