THE PREDICTION

24-year-old Paula Badosa will enter Roland-Garros as the third seed with reigning champion Barbora Krejcikova fit to play. The Spaniard was one of 2021’s most improved players on tour, rising quickly from a first WTA title at the Serbia Open to a stunning run to the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros. Badosa capped off the season with a first Masters title won at Indian Wells before reaching the semi-finals of the WTA Finals on her debut and she started this season in much the same form to win her third WTA title at the Sydney Tennis Classic. However, recent results have been tricky for Badosa with back-to-back early exits in Madrid and Rome.

Badosa has been gifted a winnable opening fixture against world number 139 Fiona Ferro, who she beat in their only previous meeting in three sets at the Rabat Open in 2018 on clay. 25-year-old Ferro is a popular home player at Roland-Garros but a straight-sets loss to Viktorija Golubic in Strasbourg on Wednesday is not enough form to challenge the Spaniard. Back Badosa to win in straight sets.
