Former world number one Naomi Osaka came back from a set down to beat Sloane Stephens on Thursday in a behemoth of a first round match at Indian Wells. The four-time Grand Slam champion is currently ranked at world number 78 after missing much of last season but realistically she could do with the extra matches. The 24-year-old has seven career WTA titles and two of them Masters titles from the 2019 Beijing Open and here back in 2018.
VERONIKA KUDERMETOVA
24-year-old Veronika Kudermetova has reached two finals on tour this season, finishing runner-up to Simona Halep at Melbourne 1 and Jelena Ostapenko at the Dubai Tennis Championships to see her set a new career-high WTA world ranking of 24th. Kudermetova won her first WTA title last season at the Charleston Open 500.
THE PREDICTION
Naomi Osaka and Veronika Kudermetova were set to meet in the semi-final of Melbourne 1 earlier this season but the Japanese star pulled out in preparation for the incoming Australian Open. Osaka almost snuck past an excellent Amanda Anisimova there but lost a deciding tiebreak to relinquish her grasp on a Grand Slam title for the first time since winning her first US Open in 2018. This could be a tricky test for Osaka as much as she could blast straight through Kudermetova. With more questions than answers, backing her to won outright is the sensible call.
