THE PREDICTION
World number 38 Matteo Berrettini came back from a set down to oust fellow Italian Lorenzo Sonego in an encouraging sign of improvement. The 27-year-old lost easily to Sonego at the Stuttgart Open three weeks ago and then had to pull out of Queen’s, failing to defend both titles, to look undercooked and possibly unfit ahead of Wimbledon but the 2021 runner-up will be ecstatic to have edged through. World number 17 Alex de Minaur is a very tough draw on grass this swing, though, and the Aussie looks the favourite here after finishing runner-up to Carlos Alcaraz at Queen’s in a very impressive week. 24-year-old De Minaur also came back from a set down to beat Kimmer Coppejans on Wednesday but a choppy opener was to be expected after losing a final last time out. Berrettini has struggled to maintain any sort of fitness all season long but it will be fascinating to see how he fares against a fellow grass-court lover.
The Italian beat De Minaur in straight sets at Queen’s in 2021 but the Aussie levelled things up with a victory at the ATP Cup early last season. Take De Minaur to earn at least two sets as the likelier of two very capable winners, with five a real possibility here.
