THE PREDICTION
World number four Jessica Pegula proved her credentials once again on Thursday, backing-up a three-set opener over Jelena Ostapenko with a straight sets victory over in-form Beatriz Haddad-Maia. The 28-year-old will have been hurting after losing a third-successive Australian Open quarter-final last month but her laser-focus on the process should keep her in the hunt at practically any tournament she enters this season, including here in Doha. World number seven Maria Sakkari grabbed an eye-catching win of her own on Thursday with a tight three-set victory over Caroline Garcia. The Greek is a hard player to back at this stage of a tournament as a consistent high=performer on tour who just cannot seem to get out of her own way when the pressure is on but this week’s results are also hard to ignore.
The pair met four times last season with two wins apiece on hardcourts, with notable results seeing Sakkari win here in the round of 16 and Pegula beating Sakkari to the Guadalajara Masters title. Sakkari took their most recent meeting soon after at the WTA Finals but it looked like Pegula’s career-best season had caught up with her by then. Back Pegula to win at least a set as the likelier of two very capable finalists, based more on the respective mentalities of both players than their tennis.
