THE PREDICTION
Former world number one Karolina Pliskova moved back up to 36th this week after an excellent nine-match winning streak saw her pick up the Transylvania Open, her first title since 2020, before a run to the semi-finals in Doha. The 31-year-old withdrew at that stage, citing very understandable fatigue given the ridiculous tennis calendar at this stage of the season, but she returned solidly with a straight sets win over Shuai Zhang on Monday to look ready to continue her purple patch. 19-year-old Ashlyn Krueger will break inside the top 70 on tour for the first time after an excellent comeback over 16th seed Caroline Garcia on Sunday. The American claimed her maiden WTA title at the Osaka Women’s Open last September to look a clear talent in these conditions but having to face Pliskova’s world-beating serve for the first time will be a very steep task. Pliskova’s overall fitness is a little doubtful at present, so back the Czech to win outright for caution’s sake.
