32-year-old Dan Evans is back up to a career-high ATP world ranking of 22nd after an out-of-the-blue run to the semi-finals of the Canada Masters was ended by eventual champion Pablo Carreno Busta. The Brit matched his best Masters run from last season’s Monte-Carlo Open, where he beat world number one Novak Djokovic for a career-best ranking win. Evans reached the round of 16 here last season before losing to eventual champion Daniil Medvedev, matching his best Grand Slam run from the 2017 Australian Open. World number 68 Jiri Vesely enjoyed his own shock win over Djokovic at the Dubai Tennis Championships back in February on his way to the final, where he finished runner-up to Andrey Rublev. The Czech has twice reached the round of 16 at Wimbledon, with his best showing in New York a run to the third round in 2015.
THE PREDICTION
This is a tough opener for Dan Evans against 29-year-old Jiri Vesely, particularly as the Brit has a storied history of struggling against left-handers. A run to the Cincinnati Open should give the 32-year-old plenty of confidence coming in to the US Open, where he has impressed in the past, but it would be wise to avoid the result here. Vesely won their previous encounter in straight sets back in 2017 and backing him to win at least a set looks the shrewd move. Keep this match away from an accumulator.
