THE PREDICTION

World number 14 Jelena Ostapenko is the defending champion in Eastbourne and playing like it so far with some searing performances. The 25-year-old is yet to drop a set this week and still going strong in the Women’s Doubles, at the time of writing, alongside Lyudmyla Kichenok – with whom she won the Birmingham Classic last week. World number 26 Camila Giorgi is also enjoying a spotless record in Eastbourne, matching her run to the semi-finals here last season before she was forced to retire through injury against Anett Kontaveit. This should be a thrilling battle between two of the harder hitters on the WTA tour but also two of the least predictable. The pair share a 1-1 head-to-head record but they have not faced each other since 2017, where Ostapenko beat the Italian on grass at Wimbledon. Given that result and her record here, backing the Latvian to win at least a set as the likelier of two very capable victors seems wise.
