THE PREDICTION

World number four Elena Rybakina is struggling to find her dominant best on court right now but she is through to the quarter-finals of the Dubai Masters after dropping sets to Victoria Azarenka, who was forced to retire from their match on Tuesday, and to Magdalena Frech on Wednesday. The 24-year-old finish runner-up to Iga Swiatek in Doha last weekend to leave something of a bruise and she will be desperate for a rematch with the two looking fairly likely to meet again.

28-year-old Jasmine Paolini is a perennial underdog on tour but she has quietly produced one of her best ever series of victories with a comeback over Beatriz Haddad-Maia and then straight-set upsets over Leyla Fernandez and Maria Sakkari. The Italian will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of 23rd for her efforts so far but she will bring confidence into this tough task having outlasted Rybakina in their previous encounter, albeit via a retirement by the Kazakh, in Cincinnati last summer. Rybakina should be coming through this match in straight sets at anything like her best but given recent results taking her to do so outright is the sensible concession.

TIP: ELENA RYBAKINA TO WIN
