World number 10 Jannik Sinner won four of his five ATP title last season, including a first ATP 500 event at the Washington Open. The 20-year-old has lost just twice this season so far to Stefanos Tsitsipas in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open and Hubert Hurkacz at the same stage of the Dubai Tennis Championships last time out. Sinner reached a first Masters final this time last season in a defeat to Hurkacz at the Miami Open.
LASLO DJERE
World number 52 Laslo Djere is one of the more acute clay-specialists on tour but he played well on Thursday to come back from a set down against Soonwoo Kwon. The 26-year-old took Stefanos Tsitsipas to two tiebreaks late last month at the Mexican Open in an impressive defeat that suggested he would be able to break a seven-match losing streak at Masters level stretching back to the Miami Open last year.
THE PREDICTION
Laslo Djere has never conceded a set to Jannik Sinner as the victor of both their previous meetings at the Budapest Open in 2019 and Kitzbuhel Open in 2020 but that should change today. Since their last meeting Jannik Sinner has won five ATP titles and played at the ATP Finals last November after coming in for compatriot Matteo Berrettini. The 20-year-old’s consistency is key, with the last player ranked outside the top 12 to beat him a then-ranked world number 143 Andy Murray at the Stockholm Open. Take the Italian to win in straight sets.
