THE LOWDOWN

World number one Iga Swiatek beat Daria Kasatkina in straight sets to get her WTA Finals campaign underway in assured fashion. The 21-year-old qualified for the year-end tournament with more than double the points of world number two Ons Jabeur after claiming an incredible eight WTA titles this season, including two Grand Slam trophies at Roland-Garros and the US Open. Swiatek set this century’s winning streak record at 37 earlier this season in a run that saw her win six titles, including four Masters, in a row.

World number six Caroline Garcia beat Coco Gauff in straight sets to open her WTA Finals account and dismiss the suggestion that splitting wit her coach on the eve of the tournament would affect her campaign. The 29-year-old is one of the more instinctive players on tour with an almost unplayable game at times and a return to her best level this summer saw her win three WTA titles, including the Cincinnati Masters, before a run to the semi-finals of the US Open.

THE PREDICTION

Caroline Garcia became one of just eight players to beat Iga Swiatek this season when she ousted the home favourite from the quarter-finals of the Poland Open back in July. The Frenchwoman has found perhaps the form of her career in recent months but after a mini blip this summer, so has Swiatek – who quickly dismissed the notion that she struggles to maintain her intensity after the clay season with wins at the US Open and San Diego Open on hardcourts. If there is a player at Fort Worth who could cause the Pole to stumble this week it’s the unpredictable Garcia but until Swiatek gives us a reason not to, backing her to come through the outright winner seems the reasonable option here.
