THE PREDICTION

World number four Casper Ruud finished runner-up to Rafael Nadal here last summer in a one-sided final that looked close to hero worship but the Norwegian performed better in his second major final of the year, losing in four sets to Carlos Alcaraz at the US Open. The 24-year-old has struggled to find any sort of rhythm, or indeed his best level, so far this season but a 10th ATP title claimed at the Estoril Open last month and a recent run to the semi-finals of the Italian Open suggests he is still a serious contender here in Paris – particularly in Nadal’s absence. World number 129 Giulio Zeppieri came through qualifying without dropping a set and then overcame, an admittedly out of sorts, Alexander Bublik in impressive five sets on Tuesday.

The 21-year-old has nothing to lose on the biggest day of his young career in first meeting with Ruud and that makes him dangerous to the Norwegian, whose confidence on court is still very fragile. The suitably cautious move is backing Ruud to win outright here but the shrewd one could well be taking Zeppieri to snatch at least a set.
