THE PREDICTION
France are in pole position to qualify from Group D after beating Germany 2-1, with in-form world number 22 Adrian Mannarino almost making it a clean sweep in an impressive three-set defeat to Alexander Zverev. The 35-year-old claimed three of his total five ATP titles last season with his unique brand of unorthodox tennis and he fares a strong shout at handing the onus to France here against an intermittent Lorenzo Sonego, who also took Zverev to three sets before defeat in Italy’s 1-2 loss to Germany. World number 46 Sonego won the Davis Cup with Italy alongside Jannik Sinner as an excellent number two but the task is much harder here in Sydney without the rising star.
The key match of this tie looks to be Caroline Garcia vs Jasmine Paolini, with so many recent meetings between the two going to the wire, but this opener should set the tone.
