31-year-old Federico Delbonis set a career-high ATP world ranking of 33rd back in 2016 but he is just one place behind that now after something of a renaissance over the last year. The Argentine won the latest of his two ATP titles in 2016 at the Marrakech Open but an exceptional clay swing last Spring, including runs to the quarter-finals of the Rome Masters and rounds of 16 at both the Madrid Masters and Roland-Garros, suggests he could break that ranking record this season.
NICK KYRGIOS
26-year-old Nick Kyrgios thumped a good young player in Sebastian Baez on Thursday, conceding just four games to the Argentine with a stupendous 90% first serve in stat. The Aussie also won his opening doubles match alongside fellow Australian Open Men’s Doubles champion Thanasi Kokkinakis against an expert pairing of Marcelo Melo and Ivan Dodig. Kyrgios’ most recent of six ATP titles came at two ATP 500 events in 2019 at the Mexican Open and Washington Open.
THE PREDICTION
The contrast between service motions here will be something to behold in itself between Nick Kyrgios’ pinpoint pace, power and second-to-none self-belief and Federico Delbonis’ unorthodox, staccato method. Based on his form so far at Indian Wells, and the confidence that comes from his joyous partnership with friend and compatriot Thanasi Kokkinakis, the Aussie is likely to overpower Delbonis here from the off. This would probably be a different story on clay but, then again, Kyrgios knows how to play to his strengths and may never play on the surface again. Take the Aussie to win outright, or in two for a fair risk.
