THE PREDICTION

Former world number 10 Emma Raducanu was ion complete control of her second round match with Dayana Yastremska before her opponent was forced to retire with a stomach complaint. The 21-year-old, via a rare stroke of luck, has now won back-to-back matches for the first time since reaching the round of 16 here last season, having ended 2023 early to undergo three surgeries ahead of this rehabilitation year.

In an ideal world this first meeting with world number two Aryna Sabalenka would have the pair at their respective best for a proper thriller, with the Belarussian’s powerful game exactly the sort that a peak Raducanu spent 2021 dismantling on the biggest stages, but the second seed should be coasting through this fixture at this moment in time. The 25-year-old had to dig deep to come back from a set down against home hopeful Peyton Stearns, a fabulous scrapper, late on Saturday but she should be better for the early scare as she continues to recalibrate from the emotional release of defending her Australian Open title in January. Back Sabalenka to win outright for caution’s sake, with Raducanu rarely disappointing against the best players on tour.

TIP: ARYNA SABALENKA TO WIN
