THE LOWDOWN

EMIL RUUSUVUORI

World number 90 Emil Ruusuvuori reached the semi-finals at Melbourne 1 last week before a decent showing in a straight-sets defeat to eventual champion Rafael Nadal. The 22-year-old came to prominence last season with a five-set victory in the first round here over Gael Monfils and then a shock win over Alexander Zverev at the Miami Masters. Ruusuvuori is yet to make it past the second round of a Grand Slam.

FELIX AUGER-ALIASSIME

World number nine Felix Auger-Aliassime beat Alexander Zverev on his way to lifting the 2022 ATP Cup alongside Denis Shapovalov for a strong way to see in the new season. The 21-year-old reached the semi-finals of the US Open last September before losing in three sets to eventual champion Daniil Medvedev and the Russian certainly seems to be his ceiling at this point with an interesting rivalry brewing against world number three Zverev. The Canadian was one of Aslan Karatsev’s vanquished foes here last season via a five-set defeat in the round of 16 but he should be targeting a quarter-final finish at least here in his form.

THE PREDICTION

This should be a really entertaining contest in a first meeting between world number nine Felix Auger-Aliassime and number 90 Emil Ruusuvuori. The Finn is much better than his current ranking with plenty of potential to break the top 50 this season whilst the younger youngster, 21-year-old Auger-Aliassime, is the seasoned veteran of this match-up with a top 10 victory already in the bag from the ATP Cup. The Canadian’s defeat of Alexander Zverev last week in Sydney was a further display of his building on-court confidence behind a powerful game that has been there from the very beginning. A semi-final at the US Open last year came as something of a surprise but it should take a top 10 player to oust him in Melbourne and, while Ruusuvuori could snatch a set, Auger-Aliassime should come through unscathed here.
