26-year-old Elise Mertens set a career-high WTA world ranking of 12th back in 2018 after winning three of her total six WTA titles. The current world number 23 played well at the Australian Open back in January in a run to the round of 16 before losing from a set up to Daniele Collins. Mertens reached the third round of Indian Wells back in 2019.
MARTA KOSTYUK
19-year-old Marta Kostyuk has been outspoken about Russian players’ attitudes at Indian Wells whilst war continues to decimate her country and she seemed to exert some of that frustration in a comeback win against Maryna Zanevska on Thursday. The Ukrainian played some excellent tennis at the Australian Open as a hugely exciting youngster, with her third round defeat to Paula Badosa in three sets one of the matches of the tournament.
THE PREDICTION
This is a really tough call between the Elise Mertens’ consummate consistency against players ranked outside the top 40, of which Marta Kostyuk currently finds herself, and the Ukrainian teenagers’ sheer potential. With the unquantifiable outside factor of the war in her homeland to consider, backing the teenager to win at least a set in defiance could be the shrewd move here. Mertens should eventually come through the winner but this match could go either way.
