THE LOWDOWN

World number five Daniil Medvedev became world number one for the first time this February after finishing runner-up to Rafael Nadal in a five-set thriller at the Australian Open. The 26-year-old won his maiden Grand Slam title at the US Open last year but he has struggled to match that same intensity since Melbourne in January, with a recent 15th career ATP title claimed at Vienna saving his 2022 season. Medvedev won the ATP Finals in 2020, one of four players here in Turin to have won the event.

World number seven Andrey Rublev struggled on his ATP Finals debut last season, losing to Novak Djokovic and Casper Ruud after overcoming Stefanos Tsitsipas in his opener. The 25-year-old started 2022 off on fire, winning three ATP titles at the Open 13, Dubai Tennis Championships and Serbia Open before struggling over much of the clay and grass swing. A recent return to form saw him take the Gijon Open last month, taking his career titles total up to 12.

THE PREDICTION

Former world number one Daniil Medvedev suffered a poor defeat to Alex de Minaur at the Paris Masters last time out but a stunning week in Vienna before that suggests he can find some of his best tennis in Turin. The new father has struggled to find his most ruthless streak this year but the conditions here suit his game over most players in the draw, with Novak Djokovic the only an out-and-out threat to him at his best as Rafael Nadal comes in on uncertain terms. Andrey Rublev beat Medvedev for the first time at last season’s Canada Masters but the elder Russian leads their head-to-head record 4-1. Rublev will be desperate to make amends for his poor showing last season but Medvedev possesses a few extra weapons in these conditions that should see him win outright.
