THE LOWDOWN

CHRISTOPHER O’CONNELL

Aussie wildcard Christopher O’Connell won the match of his career so far with an incredible shock straight-sets victory over the 13th seed Diego Schwartzman. The world number 175 set a career-high ATP world ranking of 111th back in 2020 but he could break that soon in this form as he enters the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time.

MAXIME CRESSY

24-year-old Maxime Cressy will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of at least 66th after a four-set victory over Tomas Machac on Thursday. The serve-and-volley revivalist is winning a lot of fans recently with his retro playstyle and he has beaten Reilly Opelka, Grigor Dimitrov and John Isner amongst others this season already by utilising it well. The Paris-born American finished runner-up to Rafael Nadal at Melbourne 1 two weeks ago, his first ATP tour final.

THE PREDICTION

This is a possibly a once in a lifetime opportunity for Maxime Cressy to reach the round of 16 at a Grand Slam, with it early days for his so far excellent form, but quite probably a once in a lifetime chance for Christopher O’Connell to reach the round of 16 of his home major at the Australian Open. The wildcard has proved himself more than worthy after a career-best run at a Grand Slam and a career-best win over Diego Schwartzman and there are likely sets in this for both players in a match that should see-saw throughout. Cressy is a player on the up, outwitting opponents with his throwback approach to tennis, but he will have to play the villain here in unfamiliar territory. It would be a fair amount of guesswork picking winner here, so take both players to win a set and leave it up to chance. You could add at least a tiebreak, though, with at least one in each of both players’ matches here.
