THE PREDICTION

World number 29 Frances Tiafoe beat Taro Daniel straight sets to avoid a creditable upset on Wednesday, his first match back since a bruising five-set defeat to David Goffin in the round of 16 at Wimbledon earlier this month. The 24-year-old enjoyed some strong form towards the end of last season’s hardcourt swing and he could so with finding some of that earlier this time around, with breaking the top 20 a suitable target for the popular American. 20-year-old Brandon Nakashima broke the top 50 earlier this month but he should be well inside the top 40 after a run to the round of 16 at Wimbledon was sadly not rewarded with ranking points. Nakashima reached back-to-back finals on tour this time last season, losing to Cam Norrie at the Los Cabos Open and John Millman here in Atlanta, and that experience should aid him in this tough challenge against Tiafoe – who leads this head-to-head record 3-0 after two victories this season in Indian Wells and Miami.

Two of their three encounters have gone to three sets and Nakashima is in better form than he was back in March, suggesting taking Nakashima to win at least a set could be the shrewd move here or opting for a total of three sets and leaving the winner up to chance.
