THE PREDICTION

World number six and Libema Open top seed Aryna Sabalenka was in a proper battle with Alison Van Uytvanck on Friday, taking the first set and then a tight deciding tiebreak to oust the impressive Belgian. 24-year-old Sabalenka reached the semi-finals of Wimbledon last season before defeat to eventual runner-up Karolina Pliskova and she looks to be, finally, finding her feet in 2022 just in time for another tilt at a first Grand Slam next month. 29-year-old Shelby Rogers was, and perhaps forever will be, the last player to beat the current Wimbledon champion and now retired Ash Barty with a stunning victory at the US Open last September. After several months of obscurity the American is within two places of breaking her career-high WTA world ranking of 36th after some excellent results this week, the standout of which is taking out third seed Elena Rybakina.

A first meeting between Sabalenka and Rogers should be a proper thriller and desperately hard to judge. Backing Sabalenka to win at least a set seems the sensible way to lean here but the valuable move might be taking three sets and leaving the winner up to chance.
