THE PREDICTION

This should be a fascinating and likely thrilling clash between two up-and-coming youngsters in 21-year-old Marta Kostyuk and 22-year-old Anastasia Potapova but it will be hard to separate the players from what they represent here in front of the backdrop of Russia’s assault on Ukraine. Kostyuk beat another Russian, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, in impressive straight sets on Tuesday to reach the quarter-finals of a Masters event for the first time and she will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of 27th for her efforts so far this season – including her other prestigious quarter-final reached at the Australian Open.

Potapova, however, overcame in-form Jasmine Paolini in three sets on Tuesday to look hungry for a return to form of her own, with her last excellent splurge on tour coming this time last season in deep runs both here and at the Miami Open. The Russian leads their head-to-head 2-0 after beating Kostyuk in Miami last March and from a set down at the Birmingham Classic in June but Kostyuk has certainly improved since to suggest this could come just as tight as last time out. The Indian Wells crowd will back Kostyuk to the hilt as a home-from-home player due to the war but whilst that should bolster her resolve, Potapova has coped well with similar conditions in the past. Back Kostyuk to win at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.

TIP: MARTA KOSTYUK TO WIN A SET
