World number 58 Alison Van Uytvanck was challenged throughout by Dalma Galfi but still managed to come through their first round clash in straight sets. The 27-year-old won the fifth WTA title of her career at the Astana Open last season with a hugely impressive 100% record in finals on tour.
ELENA RYBAKINA
22-year-old Elena Rybakina set a career-high WTA word ranking of 12th at the start of the season after finishing runner-up to Ash Barty at Adelaide 1. However, the Kazakh has struggled with her fitness practically ever since, with no back-to-back wins since that first tournament. Rybakina reached the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros last season, with a run to the quarter-finals of the Wuhan Masters in 2019 her best result at this level yet.
THE PREDICTION
Elena Rybakina leads a head-to-head record 2-0 over Alison Van Uytvanck but it would be wise to leave this match well out of an accumulator, if not leave it altogether. The Kazakh has struggled badly with injuries for a few months now since finishing runner-up at Adelaide 1, with three of her last seven fixtures either walkovers or retirements. Van Uytvanck is an excellent competitor who will look to turn the screw if she spots a sign of weakness and that puts this match slightly in her favour of Rybakina is under par. If taking an option, backing the Belgian to win at least a set looks a reasonable compromise.
