World number six Andrey Rublev did well to come back from a set down to beat Marcos Giron on Saturday, maintaining his now seven-match winning streak from a brilliant run to the Madrid Open title. A win of any sort would have been an excellent start to Rome as the transition from Madrid’s high altitude to these more typical clay conditions is tough to do, especially after acclimatising over six matches, and the Russian has also been battling a strange illness that made his title all the more impressive.
World number 109 Alexandre Muller stunned compatriot Arthur Fils in straight sets on Saturday to back-up an excellent comeback over Bucharest champion Marton Fucsovics. The 27-year-old will be elated to finally find some form after a tough past 12 or so months but this should be far too steep of a challenge against Rublev, who can usually be depended to play to his ranking at events like these.
