THE LOWDOWN
ALEX DE MINAUR
23-year-old Alex de Minaur got his season underway with a career-best ranking win against Matteo Berrettini at the ATP Cup in his native Sydney and he took that form through to a round of 16 exit at the Australian Open. The world number 31 added two more titles last season to his total of five with wins at the Antalya Open and Eastbourne International.
JOHN MILLMAN
World number 77 John Millman failed to qualify for Indian Wells as the top seed earlier this week but he came through as a lucky loser to beat Jan-Lennard Struff in straight sets on Friday. The 32-year-old reached the semi-finals of the Delray Beach Open last month before losing to eventual champion Reilly Opelka via three tiebreaks.
THE PREDICTION
This should be a good-natured match between compatriots Alex de Minaur and John Millman but the head-to-head record makes grim reading for the 32-year-old. Millman is yet to take a set off of Alex de Minaur in three defeats to the youngster, two of which came last season at the Rotterdam Open and Queen’s Club. Millman has found some solid form recently, especially in Florida where he beat Grigor Dimitrov and almost the eventual champion Reilly Opelka, and he fares a decent chance of forcing a decider this time around. Backing De Minaur to win outright feels a slight risk here with the scent of an upset in the air leave this out of an accumulator if you do so.
