THE LOWDOWN
26-year-old Maris Sakkari has fought hard for several brilliant seasons to reach a career-high of world number six and reach her goal of becoming the first Greek woman to qualify for the year-end WTA Finals. Sakkari only has one WTA title to her name from the 2019 Rabat Open but she is one of the most consistent performers on tour in recent times with two semi-finals reached at Roland-Garros and the US Open this season, on both occasions losing to the eventual champion, as well as deep runs at the Miami Masters and recently in Ostrava and Moscow. World number nine Iga Swiatek has been as high as fourth in the world and it is only a matter of time before the 20-year-old makes it back there. The Pole has won two titles this season at the Adelaide International and a first Masters event at the Italian Open but since the close of the clay season she has been a little wayward in places. The 2020 Roland-Garros champion is making her debut here after missing out last season’s cancelled WTA Finals.
THE PREDICTION
Were this match played on a clay court, or at any time in 2020, Iga Swiatek would be the pick to come through what should be a fascinating, exciting battle. However, 2021 has certainly bean Maria Sakkari’s year and the prod Greek will be desperate to do her country proud this week after falling short at the Tokyo Olympic Games. Sakkari has won both of their meetings in straight sets, both coming this season at Roland-Garros on clay and the Ostrava Open on a hard court more recently, so taking the 26-year-old to win outright looks a reasonable outcome here.
