THE PREDICTION

30-year-old Argentine Guido Pella missed out on the South American clay swing through injury but returned to his favourite surface last week in Cagliari, losing in the first round to Egor Gerasimov. He should be a little more match-fit for this first round tie in the Monte-Carlo Open but faces another player on a much longer return from injury in Lucas Pouille, who has played just three matches on tour this season. The 27-year-old has five titles to his name, including a clay title at the Budapest Open from 2017, but is still on a long journey back from surgery and staying fit this season will be the number one priority for the Frenchman. Between them, there is very little form to speak of, but the home-from-home advantage of playing in Monaco to a supportive crowd should help Pouille over the line here. Take the match to go to three sets our Pouille outright, though this is a difficult match to call any which way.
