Key stats

  • The only previous UEFA matches between these teams were in the group stage of the 2000/01 UEFA Champions League. Rangers won 5-0 at home on Matchday 1 and Sturm Graz won 2-0 at home on Matchday 5.
  • Sturm Graz won their previous two UEFA matches at home against Scottish teams. 2-0 vs Rangers (UEFA Champions League group stage, 25/10/2000) and 5-2 vs Livingston (UEFA Cup first round first leg, 19/09/2002).
  • Sturm Graz have won their last three UEFA competition home matches.
  • Rangers have won five of their previous seven UEFA matches against Austrian teams (L2).
  • Rangers have lost their last four UEFA competition matches.

Sturm Graz vs Rangers prediction

Sturm Graz have won each of the last two Austrian Bundesliga titles, but the loss of former boss Christian Ilzer to Hoffenheim and key striker Mika Biereth to Monaco has weakened them since the turn of the year. They started their UEFA Europa League season with a 2-0 loss to Midtjylland in Denmark a couple of weeks ago.

They now face a Rangers side that, at the time of writing, are still sticking with Russell Martin, but the former Southampton boss has endured a woeful time at the start of his reign at Ibrox. That continued in their opening game of this league phase, too, as they suffered a 1-0 loss at home to Gent in Glasgow.

Rangers will play the same way as they always do, and Sturm Graz will believe they have the physicality and counter-attacking intelligence to hurt them going the other way.

Sturm Graz vs Rangers tip: Double chance – Sturm Graz to win or draw
