Very much a relegation six pointer as 17th-placed St. Pauli host 16th-placed Werder Bremen.

St. Pauli preview: Home advantage massive

It’s going to be absolutely crucial that St. Pauli take advantage of playing at home in this critical match. Their last game in front of the St. Pauli fans saw those supporters play a huge part in what was a massive and surprise 2-1 victory over Stuttgart. Since then, they have fallen to a 4-0 defeat to Bayer Leverkusen at the BayArena.

St. Pauli’s last three at home have seen them remain unbeaten, drawing with both Hamburg and RB Leipzig before that win against Stuttgart. Three points here would take them out of the automatic relegation places.

Werder Bremen preview: Totally outclassed

Werder Bremen were unsurprisingly brushed aside by Bayern Munich last time out, losing 0-3 to the Bundesliga table toppers. Harry Kane put Werder to the sword, scoring two with Leon Goretzka adding a third. That defeat makes it now 12 games without a win in the Bundesliga and only four points gained over that period.

Most worrying is that their draws are now turning into losses, as four of Werder’s last five have ended in them being beaten. Key to Werder’s struggles have been their virtually non-existent goal threat, scoring just once in those most recent five games.

St. Pauli team news: Nemeth a doubt

The hosts could be without defender David Nemeth, who is battling a groin problem. However, both Hountondji and Jones will definitely be missing, with each suffering from ankle injuries.

Predicted XI: (3-4-3): Vasilj; Ando, Smith, Mets; Saliakas, Sands, Irvine, Pyrka; Sinani, Kaars, Fujita

Unavailable: Hountondji (Injured), Jones (Injured)

Questionable: Nemeth (Injured)

Werder Bremen team news: Boniface among names missing

Werder Bremen are without Victor Boniface for the trip to St. Pauli due to a knee injury, whilst defender Max Wober also misses out. Coulibaly, Weiser and Pieper join those two on the treatment table.

Predicted XI: (4-3-3): Backhaus; Sugawara, Stark, Friedl, Agu; Stage, Lynen, Puertas; Njinmah, Topp, Schmid

Unavailable: Boniface (Injured), Coulibaly (Injured), Pieper (Injured), Weiser (Injured), Wober (Injured)

Questionable:

St. Pauli vs Werder Bremen prediction

This is a massive game for both clubs but for St. Pauli in particular, it feels like a must-win. When considering the terrible form of Werder Bremen and especially their abysmal record in front of goal over the past few weeks, St. Pauli simply must capitalise. At home, they’ve been good and this match will be about whether they can convert the chances when they come their way.

Werder Bremen are under intense pressure but can afford play more conservatively and try to hit the hosts on the counter-attack. But it’s hard to see them gaining a win with their current attacking play. Therefore, back a point or three for St. Pauli via the double chance market.
