St. Pauli look to take advantage of Freiburg’s recent dip in form as the hosts battle to avoid relegation.

St. Pauli preview: Big reaction needed

St. Pauli are coming off the back of having seen their recent upturn in results come to an end as they were beaten by Borussia Monchengladbach on the road. Prior to that fixture, Alexander Blessin’s men had picked up seven points from the last nine available to them, pulling them out of the automatic relegation places.

It is a worry though for St. Pauli that they’ve failed to score in either of their last two matches and this needs to change quickly for them to get back to winning ways. Don’t be surprised if Blessin has a trick or two up his sleeve tactically to improve their potency in front of goal.

Freiburg preview: Bad stutter

Freiburg are really playing out the string even though we’re only in March. They sit 11 points off the top six and certainly don’t fall into any relegation danger. But they’ve now lost two and drawn one of their last three which has more than likely torpedoed any slim hopes of them breaking into that top six.

Julian Schuster’s side were losers at home to Union Berlin in what was a huge let down for Freiburg on the back of a draw against Bayer Leverkusen and a comprehensive 2-0 defeat away to Eintracht Frankfurt.

St. Pauli team news: Injuries keep out four

St. Pauli won’t be able to call upon Jones, Mets, Saliakis and Sands for this match with all four players missing due to injury.

Predicted XI: (3-4-3): Vasilj; Wahl, Smith, Ando; Pyrka, Rasmussen, Irvine, Ritzka; Fujita, Pereira Lage; Sinani

Unavailable: Jones (Injured), Mets (Injured), Saliakis (Injured), Sands (Injured)

Freiburg team news: Rosenfelder not back

Rosenfelder remains missing for Freiburg and he represents his side’s only injury absentee ahead of their trip to St. Pauli, although Schuster could consider some rotation after their European game in midweek.

Predicted XI: (4-2-3-1): Atubolu; Treu, Ginter, Ogbus, Gunter; Eggestein, Manzambi; Beste, Suzuki, Grifo; Matanovic

Unavailable: Rosenfelder (Injured)

St. Pauli vs Freiburg prediction

This has to be seen by St. Pauli as an opportunity. All season long, Freiburg have struggled immediately following a European game, as the squad has perhaps been dealt a tough lesson as to the rigours of the regular season when balancing domestic and European commitments. Therefore, the door has been left slightly ajar and St. Pauli could kick right through it.

St. Pauli are battling for their lives. Their defenders are protecting their goal and penalty area with everything they have and with Freiburg stuck in Bundesliga wasteland, it feels like St. Pauli’s fighting spirit and will to win may well come up trumps against Freiburg. Under the safety of the draw no bet market, back the hosts to come out on top.
