Southampton Preview: Saints’ improvement

The interim management of Simon Rusk has been positive on two occasions this season with his first spell in charge in mid-December getting them a point at Craven Cottage against upcoming opponents Fulham.

His clear decision to become more reactive and pragmatic has also allowed performances to improve in his second stint in charge and they earned their 11th point of the season last weekend with a 1-1 draw against West Ham United thanks to a late equaliser.

Fulham Preview: Frustrated Fulham

Fulham have been frustrating this season, regularly following up a defeat with a victory but the Cottagers do now come into this one on the back of rare back-to-back losses as they challenge for a top eight or nine finish and potential UEFA Europa Conference League qualification.

The Cottagers come into this one on the back of a 2-1 defeat to west London rivals Chelsea at Craven Cottage last weekend in a game in which they were 1-0 up before conceding two late goals scored by Tyrique George and Pedro Neto.

Southampton Team News: Nothing fresh

Interim coach Simon Rusk has not reported any fresh injury concerns for Southampton this weekend. That means winter transfer window loan signing from Stade Rennais, Albert Gronbaek, remains sidelined through injury, whilst former Burnley defender Charlie Taylor is still dealing with a groin issue.

Predicted XI (3-4-2-1): Ramsdale; Harwood-Bellis, Bednarek, Stephens; Walker-Peters, Downes, Ugochukwu, Manning; Fernandes, Sulemana; Onuachu

Unavailable: Gronbaek (Injured)

Questionable: Taylor (Injured)

Fulham Team News: Couple of issues

In his pre-match press conference, Fulham boss Marco Silva has confirmed that striker Rodrigo Muniz will once again miss this weekend due to an injury issue. Former Arsenal midfielder Emile Smith Rowe has returned to training and will have to be assessed ahead of this weekend.

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Leno; Tete, Andersen, Bassey, Robinson; Berge, Lukic; Sessegnon, Pereira, Iwobi; Jimenez

Unavailable: Nelson (Injured), Muniz (Injured)

Questionable: Smith Rowe (Fitness)

Southampton vs Fulham Prediction

Southampton have endured a miserable campaign with just two victories in the Premier League so far this season. Interim coach Rusk has once again appeared to successfully implement a more reactive and defensive style of football. They now face a Fulham side that need to bounce back and if they follow their patterns throughout the campaign then they will bounce back, albeit Saints will attempt to make it difficult for the Cottagers this weekend.

Southampton vs Fulham Tip: Fulham to win & under 3.5 goals
