Rennes preview: Entertaining Rennes

It has been a mixed start to the season for Stade Rennais, with their 2025/26 Ligue 1 campaign consisting of a victory, a draw and a defeat, under the management of former Newcastle United defender Habib Beye.

Rennes started the campaign with a surprise 1-0 defeat of Olympique de Marseille, courtesy of a late winner. They then suffered a 4-0 hammering at the hands of newly-promoted Lorient, before they then shared a 1-1 draw with Angers.

Lyon preview: Lyon looking to be less chaotic

Paulo Fonseca, who was appointed in mid-January, is close to finally returning to the dugout for Olympique Lyonnais having been banned for a while. Lyon have experienced a turbulent summer as they try and become less chaotic off and on the pitch.

They have started the season exceptionally well, with three wins from three in Ligue 1. They defeated Lens on the opening day of the season before a 3-0 hammering of Metz, and they then edged past Olympique de Marseille by a goal to nil at Parc OL.

Rennes team news: Camara suspended

Rennes will be without midfielder Mahdi Camara for this one as he is missing through suspension, whilst both Jeremy Jacquet and Djaoui Cisse are key injury doubts.

Predicted XI (3-5-2): Samba; Rouault, Faye, Brassier; Frankowski, Blas, Rongier, Fofana, Merlin; Al Taamari, Lepaul

Unavailable: Camara (Suspended)

Questionable: Jacquet (Injured), Cisse (Injured)

Lyon team news: A few doubts

Lyon have a few injury doubts for this weekend with centre-back Moussa Niakhate potentially sidelined alongside both midfielder Orel Mangala and winger Malick Fofana.

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Descamps; Maitland-Niles, Clinton Mata, Tagliafico, Abner; Tessmann, Morton; Karabec, Merah, Sulc; Moreira

Unavailable: Nuamah (Injured)

Questionable: Niakhate (Injured), Mangala (Injured), Fofana (Injured)

Rennes vs Lyon prediction

Such has been the poor running of the club by John Textor, Lyon have had to shed a lot of their key players, and the sale of Georgia international striker Georges Mikautadze to Villarreal on the final day of the summer transfer window has left them short up front. They were already lacking goals and Rennes, with home advantage, will not only be confident of ensuring things stay in tight, but also edging ahead in this one.

Rennes vs Lyon tip: Double chance – Rennes to win or draw
