Real Madrid vs Villarreal prediction

Real Madrid's first defeat of the season was a painful one last weekend as they were thumped 5-2 by city rivals Atletico Madrid, and they lost top spot in the La Liga table to Barcelona as a result.

A Kylian Mbappe hat-trick in the midweek UEFA Champions League win at Kairat Almaty went some way to healing those wounds, although this fixture against third-placed Villarreal will provide a much sterner test.

The visitors have been grinding out a succession of late wins recently, with their last three La Liga games being won late on. That 'never say die' mentality was also on show in their Champions League draw with Juventus on Wednesday, during which Renato Veiga struck in injury-time to level the scores at 2-2.

Real Madrid are yet to convince defensively this season, but their supreme firepower alone should see them through what promises to be an entertaining contest at Santiago Bernabeu.
