Porto team news: The confusing line-up

Porto are trying to find something to ignite them as they cram new signing Gabri Veiga into their eleven, but it hasn’t really yet made any sense what they are trying to do. Both Diogo Costa and Marko Grujic missed out on the squad due to injury.

Predicted XI (3-4-2-1): Ramos; Fernandes, Ze Pedro, Ivan Marcano; Mario, Varela, Vieira, Moura; Gabri Veiga, Mora; Samu

Al Ahly team news: Nothing fresh

There are no fresh injury concerns or suspension issues for Al Ahly to deal with ahead of their clash at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. They do, though, remain without experienced midfielder Taher Mohamed.

Predicted XI (4-3-3): El Shenawy; Hany, Dari, Ibrahim, Attiyat Allah; Fathy, Attia, Ben Romdhane; Sayed, Abou Ali, Trezeguet

Unavailable: Mohamed (Injured)

Key stats

  • This is the first FIFA club competition match between teams from Portugal and Egypt.
  • This is Al Ahly’s 30th match at a FIFA competition, which is more than any other team.
  • Excluding matches that were decided on penalties, Al Ahly’s loss against Palmeiras is their only defeat in their last ten competitive matches (W6 D3 L1).
  • Al Ahly have lost their previous two FIFA competition matches against European sides; 0-2 v. Bayern (2021) and 1-4 v. Real Madrid (2023).
  • Samu Aghehowa has scored 26 goals for Porto in all competitions this season, including seven in 11 outings against non-Portuguese sides.
  • Porto defender Zaidu Sanusi was on the winning side when Nigeria defeated Egypt 1-0 in the group stage at the 2021 AFCON.
  • Ah Ahly’s Zizo played club football in Portugal for Nacional (2016/17) and Moreirense (2017/18). He made three appearances against Porto in all competitions.

Porto vs Al Ahly prediction

In the first season of the Andre Vilas-Boas presidency, Porto only just qualified for the UEFA Europa League and they appear destined for an early exit from the FIFA Club World Cup. The Dragons took the lead against Inter Miami the other day, before succumbing to a 2-1 loss against the Lionel Messi-inspired Floridians.

They now face an Al Ahly side that, as the most successful African team of all time, began their 2025 FIFA Club World Cup campaign with a resolute goalless draw against Inter Miami before then going on to suffer a 2-0 loss to Brazilian giants Palmeiras in their second game.

Porto have struggled for any fluency in the final third despite their attacking options in terms of personnel and, even if they get themselves over the line, it is likely to be a lower scoring affair.

Porto vs Al Ahly tip: Porto to win & under 3.5 goals
