Defending champions Paris Saint-Germain find themselves in a battle for a top eight finish alongside an inconsistent Newcastle United side, who they face this week.

Kick-off date/time:

Paris Saint-Germain preview: Finding form

Paris Saint-Germain come into this one on the back of edging past Auxerre with an unconvincing victory at the weekend. Lens’ loss to Olympique de Marseille does mean that slender win was enough to send PSG back to the top of the Ligue 1 table.

They have been struggling for fluency in the league and, after winning the treble last year, have already been knocked out of the Coupe de France, while also losing to Sporting CP at Estadio Jose Alvalade in Lisbon last week.

Newcastle preview: Inconsistent Newcastle

Newcastle United come into this one on the back of a continuation of their extremely inconsistent campaign with the Magpies having suffered a 2-0 loss to Aston Villa at St James’ Park and drifted into the middle-of-the-table in the Premier League.

The visitors remain in a strong position in the UEFA Champions League, though, courtesy of an impressive 3-0 hammering of PSV Eindhoven last week, courtesy of strikes from Yoane Wissa, Anthony Gordon and Harvey Barnes.

Paris Saint-Germain team news: Rested players back

Portugal internationals Nuno Mendes and Joao Neves, as well as Achraf Hakimi, were rested at the weekend but should be back fit and available for this midweek.

Predicted XI (4-3-3): Chevalier; Hakimi, Marquinhos, Pacho, Mendes; Mayulu, Vitinha, Neves; Doue, Dembele, Kvaratskhelia

Unavailable: Safonov (Injured), Hernandez (Disciplinary), Dro (Ineligible), Ndjantou (Injured)

Questionable: Ruiz (Injured), Lee (Injured)

Newcastle team news: Major midfield doubts

Newcastle are expected to be without midfielder Joelinton, while his compatriot Bruno Guimaraes also faces a race against time to get fit for the trip to the French capital.

Predicted XI (4-3-3): Pope; Trippier, Thiaw, Botman, Hall; Miley, Tonali, Ramsey; Barnes, Wissa, Gordon

Unavailable: Schar (Injured), Livramento (Injured), Krafth (Injured), Murphy (Injured)

Questionable: Joelinton (Injured), Guimaraes (Injured)

Paris Saint-Germain vs Newcastle prediction

These two sides head into the final match of the league phase sitting tucked inside the top eight. PSG and Newcastle are two of the eight teams that are on 13 points sitting tucked inside the top eight with more impressive goal differences, although it is almost certain that at least one of them will be knocked out of the top eight. That should lead to quite a stretched and entertaining clash at the Parc des Princes, albeit PSG remain favourites.

Paris Saint-Germain vs Newcastle Tip: Paris Saint-Germain to win & both teams to score
