Paris Saint-Germain under Luis Enrique have established themselves as one of the greatest teams in UEFA Champions League after becoming only the second club in history to win the tournament in back-to-back years. Fast forward to 2026 and the West Midlands based side head to Salzburg for a chance to win the Super League for a second time.
Head coach Unai Emery had long established himself as the king of winning the Europa League and he won it for a fifth time in 2025-26, successfully leading Aston Villa to their first major trophy since 1996. They defeated Bundesliga side Freiburg in the final, winning by three goals to nil in what was a dominating performance. It’s also worth noting that they were the last team to beat PSG in European competition, doing so in the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final clash in 2025, although it was Luis Enrique’s side who progressed on aggregate.

Luis Enrique is expected to have all his squad available for this game as the remainder of PSG’s World Cup players return to training this week. Aston Villa team news: Captain McGinn a big doubt

An intriguing clash lies ahead between the French juggernauts and an Aston Villa side who have established themselves as a Premier League heavyweight over the past few years, finishing fourth-place in two of the past three seasons, including this past campaign. Unai Emery would no doubt love to get one over on his former club, but his men will have their work cut out against a team of such quality, particularly from an attacking perspective.
Whilst Villa will no doubt be ready for this game and should pose a substantial offensive threat themselves, it’s easy to see the Villains being a little disjointed as they adapt to the loss of key players such as Morgan Rogers and Youri Tielemans. Pace on the counter-attack will be crucial for them with PSG expected to have most of the ball.
