Paderborn preview: First win on the board
Paderborn finally got their campaign up and running just before the international break, putting in their best performance of the season so far against Hoffenheim and being rewarded with a 3-1 victory. That win was their first since being promoted back to the Bundesliga and took them above Stuttgart by a point.
After going two goals up in the first period, Hoffenheim pulled one back in the second half. But Paderborn would not be denied as half-time substitute Stefan Tigges sealed victory for them in the 69th minute.
Stuttgart preview: Bundesliga blues
Balancing the Champions League and the Bundesliga has led to Stuttgart struggling in the latter competition. Sebastian Hoeness’s side have picked up just three points so far after four rounds of fixtures, losing to Bayern Munich, Hoffenheim and Borussia Dortmund. Whilst that does represent a tough run of fixtures, it shouldn’t excuse those results.
Stuttgart simply haven’t played as well this season and results have reflected that. Most recently, they fired blanks in front of goal and paid the price at home to Dortmund, wasting the momentum generated following their win in the Champions League against Viking.
Paderborn team news: Three at the back
Paderborn are likely to deploy three centre-backs with both Curda and Obermair given license to roam forward as wing-backs. Two of Marino, Pieringer and Tigges should start together as a forward partnership.
Predicted XI (3-5-2): Noll; Ter Horst, Scheller, Hansen; Curda, Ulrich, Castaneda, Vidovic, Obermair; Marino, Tigges
Unavailable: Awortwie-Grant (Injured), Hoffmeier (Injured), Klaas (Injured)
Questionable: Gayret (Injured)
Stuttgart team news: Spoiled for choice
Hoeness have a decision to make over who to start up top, with Demirovic and Pejcinovic fighting for the spot. Tiago Tomas misses out through injury, whilst Jamie Leweling may be overlooked in favour of El Khannouss and Fuhrich.
Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Seimen; Vagnoman, Jeltsch, Chabot, Mittelstadt; Promel, Stiller; El Khannouss, Undav, Fuhrich; Demirovic
Unavailable Al-Dakhil (Injured), Diehl (Injured), Malanga (Injured), Nartey (Injured), Tomas (Injured), Zagadou (Injured)
Questionable:
Will Stefan Tigges start for Paderborn after his goal last time out?
Open poll and resultsPaderborn vs Stuttgart prediction
Stuttgart will be hoping for a fresh start post-international break as they look to get their domestic campaign back on track. Whilst Paderborn were winners last time out, Stuttgart clearly boasts the better squad and quality of players. Now it’s about them performing on the pitch and with time on the training ground, you would expect a vast improvement.
Paderborn scoring just three league goals this season all in one fixture remains a problem despite their victory prior to the break and it’s hard to see them outscoring Stuttgart over the course of this game. With that in mind, backing the visitors to come away with three points has to be favoured.
