Real Oviedo have been battling hard but lack a lot of quality down at the bottom end of La Liga as the Asturians now welcome Girona to Estadio Carlos Tartiere.

Oviedo preview: Battling but struggling

Following their promotion via the playoffs last season, Real Oviedo started reasonably well before the bizarre sacking of now Serbia boss Veljko Paunovic. His replacement, Luis Carrion, has been replaced by Uruguayan coach Guilherme Almada.

There has been an improvement under the new manager but results have remained very average. They come into this one on the back of frustrating Barcelona for large parts at Camp Nou before eventually succumbing to a 3-0 loss last weekend.

Girona preview: New and improved

Michel was critical of the club’s hierarchy and even his players at the start of this season but Girona have managed to propel themselves up the table throughout the middle part of the campaign, from the danger zone and into contention for European qualification.

The Catalans were on a three-match winning streak before last weekend’s 1-1 draw with Getafe at Montilivi in a game in which Manchester City loanee Vitor Reis scored an equaliser deep into second-half stoppage-time for the visitors.

Oviedo team news: A few doubts

Oviedo are dealing with a few doubts for this one ahead of the visit of Girona, with centre-back Eric Bailly and left-back Rahim Alhassane both potentially unavailable.

Predicted XI (4-4-2): Aaron; Lucas Ahijado, David Costas, Carmo, Javi Lopez; Hassan, Sibo, Colombatto, Ilyas Chaira; Alberto Reina, Fede Vinas

Unavailable: Alvaro Lemos (Injured)

Questionable: Bailly (Injured), Alhassane (Injured), Ejaria (Injured)

Girona team news: Several injuries

Girona are dealing with several injury issues for this one as Donny van de Beek and Azzedine Ounahi are confirmed absentees, while Axel Witsel is also a key doubt.

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Ter Stegen; Hugo Rincon, Reis, Blind, Alex Moreno; Ivan Martin, Fran Beltran; Tsygankov, Lemar, Bryan Gil; Vanat

Unavailable: Juan Carlos (Injured), Ricard Artero (Injured), Van de Beek (Injured), Ounahi (Injured), Portu (Injured)

Questionable: Witsel (Injured), Cristhian Stuani (Injured), Abel Ruiz (Injured)

Oviedo vs Girona prediction

Real Oviedo have lacked goals throughout this season and are now becoming some way adrift of safety in La Liga. They begin the match day sitting nine points adrift of the aforementioned Getafe, who are 17th. Girona will head across to Asturias believing that they really can squeeze themselves into the top seven and the European spots, and they have to be viewed as the favourites for this one at the Tartiere.

Oviedo vs Girona tip: Girona to win
