Key stats

  • Northern Ireland have lost only two of their last 11 World Cup qualifying matches at home (W6 D3). They are unbeaten in five (W2 D3).
  • Northern Ireland have not conceded a goal in their last five World Cup qualifying matches at home.
  • Germany have won the last ten international matches between these teams - since a 1-1 draw in Germany in a World Cup qualifying encounter in November 1996. Northern Ireland’s last victory against Germany was in November 1983 (W 1-0 in a European Championship qualifier in Hamburg).
  • Germany have won 27 of their last 29 World Cup qualifying matches (L2).

Northern Ireland vs Germany prediction

Northern Ireland put in an excellent performance the other day to defeat a strong Slovakia side by two goals to nil at Windsor Park. That backed up a win in Luxembourg last month to leave them on six points after three matches, after a hard-fought 3-1 defeat to Germany last month, which flattered Die Mannschaft.

The Germans began their qualification campaign with a very poor 2-0 loss to Slovakia in Bratislava, heaping the pressure on Julian Nagelsmann. Comfortable wins by the scoreline, albeit underwhelming in terms of performance level, against the Northern Irish and Luxembourg leaves them also on six points.

If Northern Ireland can make things difficult and suffocating for a German side lacking cohesion then they have a chance, albeit the visitors surely have to show their quality to inch towards North America.

Northern Ireland vs Germany tip: Germany to win & under 3.5 goals
