THE LOWDOWN
The two most complete teams in the NFL meet at the stunning Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas as Superbowl LVIII sees a repeat of the 2019 edition with the Kansas City Chiefs facing the San Francisco 49ers.
The 49ers have arguably the most dangerous offense in the league with some ridiculously good weapons in Christian McCaffrey, Brandon Aiyuk, Deebo Samuel and George Kittle. So much however will rely on the play of quarterback Brock Purdy and the Chiefs will unquestionably look to pressure him and force him to throw which will mean trying to stop the running game and McCaffrey in particular.
The Chiefs defense has been exceptional this year and that is not something they have necessarily been known for in recent runs to the Superbowl. Mahomes and company have so often led the way in high-scoring games but the D is arguably as good as the offensive side of the ball this year.
They do of course have an impressive offense once again with the best quarterback in the game right now. Even if the offensive weapons are not quite as well-known as years gone by – not including Travis Kelce (and Taylor Swift) of course – but they have incredible cohesion coming into this game. They literally look like scoring on every single drive and that is how they got this far with opponents in the play-offs simply being unable to keep up with them.
That will be the key to this game. Can the 49ers have enough time in possession to keep Mahomes off the field of play? Can the 49ers get their running game going early and dictate the play? Can Purdy play an error-free 60 minutes of play in the biggest game of his career?
THE PREDICTION
All the questions are focused on the 49ers coming into this game. We know what the Chiefs can do and the level of play they will produce. It is whether the 49ers can ultimately play something close to the perfect game to beat them which they will have to do. I am surprised the 49ers are favourites. The Chiefs may not quite have as many names as the 49ers but they have the best player in Mahomes and an outstanding defense that can win any game. They also know what Superbowl week is like and how to handle that pressure and the magnitude of it….which will only be heightened in Las Vegas! The Chiefs to win in what could be a see-saw battle and go right down to the wire. This could well be a classic!
