Newcastle Preview: Magpies flying high

Newcastle United come into this one on the back of a hard-fought 1-1 draw with Brighton and Hove Albion at the AMEX Stadium down on the south coast last weekend in a game in which Alexander Isak notched an 89th minute equaliser from the penalty spot for the Magpies.

Eddie Howe has been in hospital in the last month or so as he battled pneumonia but he is back in the dugout as the EFL Cup champions try and push for a return to the UEFA Champions League, having qualified for Europe’s elite club competition in the 2022/23 campaign.

Chelsea Preview: UECL finalists

In midweek, Chelsea defeated Swedish Allsvenskan side Djurgarden by a goal to nil at Stamford Bridge thanks to a 38th minute strike from Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall. That completed a 5-1 aggregate victory to set up a UEFA Europa Conference League final against Real Betis.

The relationship between Enzo Maresca and the supporters is fractured but the Blues have rediscovered their form of late as they push for UEFA Champions League qualification, coming into this one on the back of three successive victories in the Premier League.

Newcastle Team News: Defensive doubts

Eddie Howe has confirmed that defenders Fabian Schar and Kieran Trippier are ‘doing pretty good’ as they prepare to return this weekend but they do remain doubts. Joelinton remains out but could be back this season.

Predicted XI (4-3-3): Pope; Trippier, Botman, Burn, Livramento; Willock, Tonali, Guimaraes; Murphy, Isak, Gordon

Unavailable: Lascelles (Injured), Targett (Injured), Hall (Injured), Joelinton (Injured)

Questionable: Schar (Fitness), Trippier (Fitness)

Chelsea Team News: Nothing fresh

In his pre-match press conference ahead of the visit of Djurgarden on Thursday, Enzo Maresca said that Marc Guiu is not too far away so could be involved this weekend. They remain without the likes of Wesley Fofana and Christopher Nkunku.

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Sanchez; Caicedo, Chalobah, Colwill, Cucurella; Lavia, Fernandez; Neto, Palmer, Madueke; Jackson

Unavailable: Fofana (Injured), Anselmino (Injured), Kellyman (Injured), Mudryk (Disciplinary), Nkunku (Injured)

Questionable: Guiu (Injured)

Newcastle vs Chelsea Prediction

Newcastle United have been brilliant in the last few months with that run of form including ending their long trophy drought. The Magpies can finish an excellent season with UEFA Champions League qualification and they will get their foot down at home here. Chelsea’s results in the Premier League have been improved but both in the league and in Europe, their performances have remained generally unconvincing. With Cole Palmer appearing to be returning to form they will fancy their chances of scoring but Newcastle remain favourites on Tyneside.
