Nathan Aspinall didn't have it all his own way in his 3-1 victory over colourful character Lourence Ilagan, but that battle will have served him well as he seeks to make the third round for the seventh time in his eight PDC World Darts Championship participations.
'The Asp' generally performs well on the Ally Pally stage, and there was little sign in his first-round victory of the dartitis that has effected him on occasion in recent times.
Texan veteran Leonard Gates, meanwhile, came through a nail-biter to defeat Mickey Mansell 3-2 on the same day.
The 55-year-old, who has never reached the third round at Alexandra Palace, had to come from two sets to one down against the Norther Irishman and showed excellent composure to take control in the deciding set.
Aspinall is a signifcant step-up in quality though, and it is difficult to see anything other than a routine win for the Stockport thrower.
